Everyone needs a good road trip once in a while to get away from the stress and worries of everyday life. Your regular routine may work for most of the year, but it’s essential to make time for exploring what the world has to offer.
When is the last time you took a vacation day? If you’ve been working nonstop for months, it’s time to take a break and pursue a passion. Have you ever been surfing? Whether you’re completely new the board or are at home on the water, make your way to Khao Lak!
Thailand’s Beautiful Shores
There are many surf spots in Thailand—Phuket’s being the most notable ones. However, along the 740 km stretch of Thailand’s west coast, there are paradises promising beautiful surfing experiences that are yet to be discovered. Nearby islands will be perfect if you are looking for less-than-crowded beaches with less-than-perfect waves. If you’re looking for a place that offers excellent surfing experience and is off the grid, then here’s the beach we’ve kept secret just for you: Pakarang Beach.
Going to Memories Beach Bar
You’ll want to head to Memories Beach Bar in Pakarang Beach. As soon as you drive down towards this location, you’ll instantly feel the laid-back aura the place emanates. This locally owned beach bar and restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy the smooth sands while sipping on your favorite cocktail, taking in the majestic view of the Andaman Sea.
Every day, the kitchen pumps out great local and western dishes from 8 a.m. all the way to midnight, so you’ll have plenty to eat during your visit. During the evening, you’ll find live music, too. This place is pretty much the epitome of “good vibrations.”
If by any chance you’re going to visit during October, keep an eye out for the Khao Lak Surf Contest held there and then.
Getting Your Surf Started
Don’t have your own surfboard? No problem. You can go ahead and rent one to paddle out into the ocean. Regardless of your skill level, there are instructors nearby who are more than happy to fit you out with the right gear and train you up into a master surfer. Even before you hit the water, they’ll make sure you know the basics of surfing and ocean safety, which includes spotting rip currents and how to get out of one.
If you need anything, the Pakarang Surf Shop has all the essentials, located just behind the Memories Beach Bar. They offer a wide array of surfboards and many other types of equipment. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, look for the shop owner and his team—they’ll set you up with just what you need!
Available Non-Surf Activities
If the ocean is calm or you’re not in the mood to surf, there are plenty of other things to do, such as biking, hiking, getting a massage, or just laying back reading your favorite book. A visit to the world-famous Similan Islands is another fantastic choice. It is one of Asia’s top destinations known to offer world-class snorkeling and diving experiences. Keep in mind that these islands are only open from October 15 to May 15.
Don’t forget to stop by the International Tsunami Museum to pay your respects to the 2004 tsunami victims. It is a unique experience and one that may very well humble you and educate you on one of the most devastating events ever to occur in Southern Thailand.
Choosing the Right Time to Visit
If you will be visiting Khao Lak primarily for surfing, visiting anywhere between April and November is your best bet. At this time, the waves are suitable for longboarding. Since the waves will depend entirely on the southwest monsoon, check the weather and surf forecast before making any concrete plans.
If you’ve never surfed before, this beach (along with others nearby) is an excellent place to get started. Here, you can learn how to pop up and balance on smooth waves, giving you a positive experience you’ll surely want more of.
Selecting Your Accommodation
Where you stay will depend on your budget. From the basic bungalow on the beach to a five-star resort, there’s easily a place that will fit your needs.
We hope you enjoy your trip to Khao Lak! There is certainly a lot to explore for you, and your family is going to enjoy it.
